Workshops

IPTD members join students from Performance Studies and Screen Cultures for a series of professionalization workshops throughout the year. These events cover a variety of topics, such as best practices for grant and fellowship application writing, CV and resume editing, interviewing, and teaching.

Pedagogy

One of the hallmarks of our program is excellent teaching training and experience. Most IPTD students serve as teaching assistants for an introductory theatre class, teach first-year seminars on topics related to their research, and teach at least one upper-level course of their own design. Students frequently complement this experience by participating in pedagogy workshops through the Searle Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning and/or by completing the Searle’s Teaching Certificate Program.

Artistic Practice

We recognize the significant impact that practical knowledge of the theatre has on the study of performance and drama and the many ways in which a background in theatre-making can inform your research. The lively and innovative theatre scene in the city of Chicago is a fertile complement to the rich archival resources in the area.

Although not required, students are encouraged to serve as dramaturgs for productions at the Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Center for the Performing Arts. IPTDers have also recently worked in Chicago as dramaturgs at Court Theatre, Timeline Theatre, Halcyon Theatre, and Sideshow Theatre and regionally at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
